Trip Report
Don't Miss Midland!
April 2008, Midland, Texas
Just
some ideas from a Native Midlander (www.MidlandTexas.gov)
for parents traveling with kids (younger kids-teens may not enjoy these places
so much...)
The Petroleum Museum
has lots of different areas (it's not all about oil!), including a 'room of
race cars'. There are lots of interactive things to do here, and they have
a pretty good gift shop.
We also have the Planetarium at the Museum
of the Southwest which was one of my favorite places to go as a kid. The
Museum of the Southwest also has a Children's Museum that is so much fun! My
kids (and the grown-ups, too!) loved to go spend the day there. Again, its
filled with interactive stations, from dress-up to reptiles (yuck!).
Midland is also home of several 'George W. Bush Childhood Homes'. I know one
(the one on Ohio) is open for tours. While that may not appeal to kids, some
adults might be interested.
Finally,
for big kids, little kids, and grown-ups alike, we have a 3-screen, double-feature
drive-in movie open every night. At the Big
Sky Drive-In you can see 2 movies for $5 per adult. Not bad! They also
have an excellent concession 'stand' inside with tables (inside & out)
where they serve the world-famous (or at least TEXAS-famous!) Chihauhua Sandwich
(no, don't be gross!) It's made with CHILI!). The theatre also has 3 playgrounds
for the kids.
For
you sports fans, we have a minor-league team here, The Midland
Rockhounds. Take the whole family for a hot dog & a game!
Next time you're in the West Texas area, be sure to stop in Midland. We may
not have much water, but we have great sunsets, lots to do, places to shop,
& plenty of great places to eat! And the people aren't bad, either!
