Zoo Revue: Vogel Park Marlow

August 2008: Near Rostock, Germany

Vogel Park Marlow. This place is great! Our friends have been encouraging us to come for ages and finally put us in their car and drove us there to prove they were right all along.

Vogel Park Marlow has intriguing and large interactive bird areas with friendly birds of all kinds, a darling petting zoo (pigs, goats, sheep, etc.), a monkey habitat one can walk THROUGH, and, best of all according to my children (ages 11 and 9), playgrounds that satisfy every need for climbing, pretending, and adventure; even the adults are hoping some child will "need assistance" so they have an excuse to climb the towers, swing across the bridges, and find the way.

Although my children were enthralled by the animals, they could not tear themselves away from the playground once we stumbled upon one. Parents: bring a newspaper or whatever guidebook you have been wanting to read and a thermos of something pleasant to sip.

If you manage before the playground is discovered, there are also other animals (for example, otters) and one can be part of their activities. Can climb through underground tunnels and pop one's head up in a prairie dog town (under a glass dome, thankfully). One can feed the birds "cocktails.” The grounds provide encouraging habitats and even the sensitive adults who don't like zoos for the most part, like me, forget to feel sorry for all the animals and birds. There are wagons to pull tired children in, plenty of restrooms, food booths along the way and a restaurant.

We will have to return. (Zoo is about 33 km East of Rostock)
